Situated between the conurbation areas of Rhine/Main and Cologne/Bonn,
surrounded by the charming Kroppacher Schweiz (Kroppach’s Switzerland),
the Westerwald Lakes and the upper valley of the river Wied, Hachenburg

  Let’s
start our tour on the old marketplace, “Alter Markt”, with
its baroque charisma, framed by antique post and beam houses. This place
has already gained importance as a trading centre on the old road between
Cologne and Leipzig in medieval times. In order to secure this status,
Friedrich I. (Barbarossa) made Count Heinrich II von Sayn build a castle
here in 1180 – a clever decision: traders and merchants settled,
prosperity was guaranteed.

Numerous little shops and restaurants are still situated around the
historical “Alter Markt”, its charm and charisma are unchanged.
With regard to the modern challenges of economy, of tourism and its citizens
an opportune infrastructure, varied cultural and leisure time offers as
well as a good school and education system have been established. Today,
far beyond its outskirts, Hachenburg stands for economic success and a
high quality of life.
